Endnote Tips & Troubleshooting
Before installing EndNote, make sure that the student has plenty of free H: quota (at least 10MB is recommended)
If anyone is out of quota, or even close to their limit, clean their profile.
After cleaning their profile, make sure that you run EndNote from Networked Applications BEFORE opening Word.
If EndNote still refuses to open, right click on the application object and 'verify'
If Endnote is STILL refusing to open or giving error messages, run 'Delete Nalcache' from Networked Applications > General Software > Utilities. Right click on the Application Launcher (NAL) in the system tray by the clock and 'refresh'. ‘Verify’ EndNote again from Networked Applications.

"Invalid Class String" error message in Endnote 10
In Word, if you try to access the Endnote menu from the toolbar the following error message can occur: "Invalid Class String." Verifying the Endnote application will not fix
this problem. Instead you must do the following:
Start menu > Control Panels > Add/Remove Programs
Select "Endnote X Volume License Edition"
Select "Click here for support information"
Click on "Repair"
The following error message is displayed when Word is opened:
"! Word could not load this add-in program. (h:\jccs\Windows\...\ENCWYW.WordXP.wll)"
This problem occurs if Endnote has been installed within the user profile on a different PC, but is not installed on the current PC.
To fix the problem you can install Endnote onto the current PC from Start > Networked Applications > General Software > Spreadsheets & Databases > Endnote X
If Endnote generates errors relating to Endnote Web follow the advice at:
http://www.endnoteweb.com/support/faqs/CWYW/faq3.asp
Alternatively, if Endnote is no longer required you can delete the startup files relating to the Endnote add-in in the following way:
Close Microsoft Word
Navigate to H:\jccs\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup
Select the Word add-in file "EN10CWYW.WordXP"
Delete it.
Open up Word. The error message should no longer appear.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The error message which appears is "The specified Word library cannot be unloaded
because it is in use". If this happens, just follow the steps below to remove the problem:
1. Start up Word and click on Help in the menu bar across the top of the screen.
2. Select About Microsoft Office Word.
3. Click the Disabled items button.
4. In the box which appears, select EndNote and click OK.
5. If prompted, allow the files to be loaded into Word.
6. Shut down Word and re-start it.
The EndNote Web toolbar should now appear and work as normal.

Problem related to EndNote X1 with Windows Vista Home Premium and Office 2007 - Invalid class String
Problem: “Cite While you Write toolbar†doesn’t work properly (when buttons such as “Go to EndNoteâ€, “Insert Selected Citationâ€, “Update Citations and Bibliography†are pressed, error message “Invalid class String†appears).
Causes: second EndNote site (http://www.endnote.com/support/faqs/CWYW/faq13.asp), if you have never run the EndNote program under the account you're current logged in as, you may get an "Invalid Class String" error when you try to use the tools in Word.
Solution (second EndNote site):
1. Close out of Word.
2. Open the EndNote program and a library.
3. Open Word and try to use the tools.
4. They should function as expected.
You only need to open the programs in this order the first time in order to establish the link between Word and EndNote properly.
You may also get this error if the program was installed under a different account than the one you are currently logged in under. On a Windows 2000/XP/Vista system you must install the program while logged in as the user who will be running the program, and this account must have administrative rights to the local machine in order for the registry to be updated correctly. Rerun the installation under these conditions and the error should be resolved.
This error may also be caused if you are using a different version of EndNote than the version of the CWYW tools that are installed in Word. Make sure that the version of EndNote that's currently open matches the version of the tools in Word when you go to "Tools > EndNote"(in Word 2000/XP/2003) or look at the "Add-Ins" tab in Word 2007. The name of that "EndNote" submenu should be the same number as your current version of EndNote (for example, EndNote X1 will have an "EndNote X1" submenu in word 2000/XP/2003). Only EndNote X1 will have an "EndNote" tab in Word 2007.
Solution (in my case): Neither of the solutions proposed before had solved my problem. After trying so much, including reinstalling EndNote and Office, I discovered that the cause was Windows Vista UAC (User Account Control). Disabling this Windows feature, removing all EndNote templates in Word, reinstalling “Cite While you Write toolbar†(see how to do after, in this article) and following what says EndNote (start EndNote before Word in the first time you’ll use it), you`ll be able to use both programs properly. Since Windows Vista UAC is a important security tool, and it is not recommended to disable it, how could I solve this problem?
Below I will describe the steps I used to make EndNote work properly without disabling Windows Vista UAC:
1. Open Microsoft Word;
2. go to Office button and select “Word Optionsâ€, and then “Templatesâ€;
3. in manage, go to “Com Templates†and remove “Cite While You Writeâ€;
4. in manage, go to “Word Templates†and remove “EndNote Cwyw.dotm†and “EndNote Web Cwyw.dotmâ€;
5. Close Microsoft Word;
6. Go to C:\Program Files\EndNote X1 and right click the file “EndNote X1.exeâ€;
7. Select “Properties†and “Compatibility†and mark “Run this program as an administratorâ€;
8. Click “Show settings for all users†and mark “Run this program in compatibility mode forâ€;
9. Go to the start menu and in the search box, type: CMD;
10. Hold down SHIFT and CTRL and hit the Enter Key;
11. At the prompt, type: CD "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Thomson ResearchSoft\Cwyw";
12. From this folder, run the command: regsvr32 "EndNote Cwyw.dll";
13. Open EndNote program;
14. Open Word program.
Now you’ll be able to use all features of EndNote in Microsoft Word 2007.
